Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most popular questions

I split the cost into two parts: one-time setup (niche audit, keyword research, negative keywords, campaign structure, conversion tracking in GA4 and GTM, initial creatives) and monthly management (bid optimization, ad testing, search query analysis, reporting). Starter ad budget for Kyiv — from 30,000 UAH/month; below that doesn't make sense due to capital-city CPC. For competitive niches (legal, medical, real estate) the realistic floor is 80,000-150,000 UAH/month on media.

Exact figures depend on niche, number of directions and funnel complexity. I don't take % of spend — only a fixed work fee. This matters: % of budget incentivizes the contractor to spend more even when it's not profitable.

Kyiv is the most expensive PPC market in Ukraine. Specifically:

  • CPCs are 2-3x higher than in Lviv, Odesa, Dnipro. The query “lawyer Kyiv” may cost 60-120 UAH per click, the same in Rivne — 15-25 UAH.
  • Auction competition is denser. Top-3 positions usually have 8-15 advertisers on competitive queries in Kyiv, in regions — 3-5.
  • Audience is more “skeptical”. Kyivans are used to ads, scroll past to organic more often, check reviews. So ad and landing-page quality is critical.
  • 10 districts with different purchasing patterns. Pecherskyi and Shevchenkivskyi — premium business, Darnytskyi and Desnianskyi — mass market. The same offer performs differently.

Kyiv strategy needs more precise targeting (district, time, device), deeper keyword research, more powerful remarketing. Without these, budget melts with no result.

I work with the entire Google Ads stack:

  • Search — the foundation for most businesses. Text ads on commercial-intent queries. In Kyiv this is 50-70% of budget for most niches.
  • Performance Max — hybrid ML-driven campaign across all Google networks (Search, Display, YouTube, Discover, Maps, Gmail). Runs on historical data — minimum 30-50 conversions per month required.
  • Display — banner ads on GDN. Suitable for branding, remarketing, reaching new audiences. In Kyiv works well for real estate, automotive, B2C services.
  • YouTube — video ads. Skippable in-stream, non-skippable, bumper ads, Shorts. For Kyiv businesses important for awareness and warm-contact retargeting.
  • Shopping / Demand Gen — for e-commerce, integrates with the online store via Google Merchant Center.

The specific mix depends on funnel and goals. I don't “sell Performance Max to everyone” — for some Kyiv niches Search + remarketing works better and more transparently.

Large agencies are conveyors with teams, templates and KPIs. That works if you have a budget from 200-500k UAH/month and need a “process” (reports, calls, presentations). For many Kyiv companies this is appropriate. But there are nuances:

  • Senior vs junior. In a large agency your account is often run by a junior or middle specialist “supervised” by a senior. I work the account personally — no handoff to juniors.
  • Minimum budget. Most large agencies won't take projects below 80-100k UAH/month media spend. I work from 30k.
  • Flexibility. An ad change at an agency is a ticket, an approval, a week of waiting. With me — 24 hours.
  • Work cost. Agencies take 15-25% of budget or 30-80k UAH/month minimum. My rate is fixed and transparent.

I don't compete with Netpeak — they have their niche. I'm right for businesses that want personal attention, transparency and a senior level without agency overhead.

Without correct conversion tracking Google Ads is a guessing game. I configure tracking via a two-layer architecture:

  • Google Tag Manager (GTM) — site container that pushes all events (form submit, call click, messenger transition, scroll, add to cart).
  • GA4 — receives events from GTM, marks them as conversions, provides behavior reports.
  • Google Ads — imports conversions from GA4 for Smart Bidding (Maximize Conversions, Target CPA, Target ROAS).

Standard event set for Kyiv businesses: form submit, click on phone/Telegram/WhatsApp, call from site via call-tracking (Ringostat, Binotel), add to cart, checkout, purchase. For offline business — offline conversion import from CRM so Smart Bidding optimizes not on “lead” but on “closed deal”.

This isn't “install a counter” — it's a full analytics project, often skipped even by major Kyiv agencies.

Negative keywords are phrases on which your ad SHOULD NOT show. Without a quality negatives list, Google Ads in Kyiv burns 30-50% of budget on irrelevant traffic: free, DIY, reviews, jobs, where to buy in Belarus and similar.

Why Kyiv needs particularly many negatives:

  • Kyiv audience generates more queries, with a much higher share of informational ones.
  • Competitive bids are high — every irrelevant click costs 30-100+ UAH.
  • On broad match types Google shows ads on low-intent queries — without aggressive negatives this is guaranteed waste.

At launch I prepare 500-2000+ negatives: general (free, DIY, reviews), niche (specific to your business), geo (excluding irrelevant cities), “off-intent” lists. Then I review the search query report weekly and add new negatives — this is ongoing work, not “set and forget”.

Smart Bidding is automated ML-based bid management by Google. Strategies:

  • Maximize Conversions — Google maximizes conversion count within daily budget.
  • Target CPA — Google targets a specified cost per acquisition.
  • Target ROAS — Google targets a specified return on ad spend (for e-commerce).
  • Maximize Conversion Value — for businesses with varying conversion values.

When to launch: after the account has accumulated 30-50 conversions over the past 30 days. Earlier — Smart Bidding runs without data and often performs worse than manual. In Kyiv with its high CPC this threshold is reached quickly (1-2 months), but launch must be on Manual or Maximize Clicks.

Smart Bidding isn't a “magic button”. It's a good tool but requires clean data: correct conversions, no offline garbage, negatives, valid UTMs. Without these, the algorithm trains on “junk signals”.

Remarketing is showing ads again to people who already visited your site. In Kyiv with its large traffic volume, remarketing often delivers the highest ROAS in the entire account, because the audience is warm.

I build segmentation by behavior:

  • All visitors over 30/60/90 days — broad remarketing via Display and YouTube.
  • Cart abandoners — for e-commerce, aggressive retargeting with promotional offer.
  • Viewed specific pages (e.g., pricing, contacts) — hot leads, separate messaging for them.
  • Did not convert — exclude those who already submitted a request.
  • Similar audiences (Similar Audiences / Customer Match) — for scaling to “twins” of current customers.

Channels: Display (banners), YouTube (video retargeting), Performance Max (as one of the signals), Discovery. Integrates with SMM via Meta Custom Audiences for cross-channel funnel.

Here's the week-by-week breakdown for Kyiv:

  • Weeks 1-2. Audit, keyword research, GA4/GTM setup, campaign structure, initial negatives, ads, remarketing audiences.
  • Weeks 3-4. Launch on manual bidding. Collect first conversions, expand negatives, test ads.
  • Month 2. Optimization: pause underperforming campaigns, add new keyword groups, test landings. If 30+ conversions/month — switch to Smart Bidding.
  • Months 3-4. Scale what works. Launch Performance Max, YouTube, broader Display audience.

Realistic stable result in Kyiv is 60-90 days of work. Anyone promising “100 leads in a week” either has a ready niche with low competition (rare in Kyiv) or is setting you up. First leads may appear by day 3-7, but a stable optimized model is 2-3 months of systematic work.

Yes — geo-targeting in Google Ads allows precise show-control. Available levels:

  • City — all of Kyiv.
  • District — Pecherskyi, Shevchenkivskyi, Podilskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, Desnianskyi, Darnytskyi, Holosiivskyi, Obolonskyi, Dniprovskyi, Solomianskyi.
  • Radius from a point — e.g., 3 km from your Khreshchatyk office or from a sales point in Unit.City.
  • Postal codes — more precise targeting on specific residential areas.

For local business (dental clinic, café, beauty studio) I recommend 3-7 km radial targeting from the location. For e-commerce with Kyiv delivery — all of Kyiv + region. For B2B — focus on business districts (Pecherskyi, Shevchenkivskyi) and dayparting on business hours.

Separately I configure bid adjustments by geo: premium districts (Pechersk) — increase bids by 15-30%, because purchasing power is higher. This is part of personalized strategy that template agencies rarely do.

Critical point: the Google Ads account is always yours. I only get manager access via MCC (My Client Center). This means:

  • All data (campaign history, audiences, conversions) stays in your own account.
  • If we end the engagement — you keep the account, I simply lose access.
  • You see all spend in real time via Google Ads → Billing.
  • You pay Google directly with your card or corporate account.

Many large Kyiv agencies (no names, but you'll recognize them) run ads via their own account — meaning at separation you lose all data, all Smart Bidding history, all conversions, all audiences. This is classic lock-in. With me there's none of that by default.

Yes — an audit is often the first step of cooperation, especially if you already have ads running and aren't sure they're efficient. I check:

  • Account structure — whether campaigns are split by intent, whether keywords are grouped properly.
  • Conversion quality — what's counted, no duplicates, correctly imported from GA4.
  • Negative keywords — presence and quality of lists.
  • Ads — relevance, RSA formats, extensions, quality score.
  • Landing pages — speed, mobile UX, alignment with the ad, conversion rate.
  • Budget — where money goes, where 80% of spend is, where the leak is.
  • Reporting and attribution — attribution model, CRM integration if any.

I deliver a report with a concrete problem list and a prioritized fix plan. Often 60-80% of efficiency can be lifted without raising budget — just by cleaning up the account. Especially relevant in Kyiv where every UAH of budget is expensive.

Google Ads in Kyiv, Ukraine — PPC Setup and Management | Alex Filiuk

Google Ads in Kyiv — performance marketing for businesses on Ukraine's most expensive market

Google Ads in Kyiv isn't “drop in a budget and wait for leads”. It's the toughest PPC market in Ukraine with the highest cost per click, densest auction competition and most demanding audience. I'm Alex Filiuk, a Senior performance-marketing and UI/UX specialist with 15+ years of experience. I set up and run Google Ads for Kyiv companies: small businesses with 30,000 UAH/month budgets, mid-market with 100-200k, and larger projects from 500k UAH/month on media.

This page brings together everything a business owner or marketing director in Kyiv should know before launching or rebuilding Google Ads: how the capital market differs from regional ones, how to architect the account structure, how to configure conversions in GA4 and GTM, how many and what kind of negative keywords Kyiv requires, when to launch Smart Bidding, and how to choose between an agency, a freelancer and a senior specialist.

Why Google Ads in Kyiv is a separate level of difficulty

Kyiv is a city of 3+ million population and 4+ million metro area. That's 30-40% of total Ukrainian demand in most niches. All major advertisers compete here at once: banks (PrivatBank, monobank, Sense Bank), e-commerce (Rozetka, EVA, Avrora, Allo), IT (Grammarly, Reface, Genesis), retail chains, legal, medical, education brands. This creates specific conditions:

  • Highest CPC in Ukraine. “Lawyer Kyiv” — 60-120 UAH per click, “divorce attorney Kyiv” — 100-180 UAH. The same queries in Rivne — 15-30 UAH.
  • Auction is denser. A single commercial query has 8-15 advertisers in top positions.
  • Quality Score is critical. Weak ad or slow landing — and your bid is automatically 1.5-2x lower than competitors at the same spend.
  • Audience is skeptical. Kyivans are used to ads and filter them out automatically — without a strong value proposition CTR drops.
  • Remarketing is critical. 70-80% of users don't convert on first contact — without retargeting you pay for warm traffic that bleeds out to competitors.

This means template approaches don't work in Kyiv. What pays back in Lviv or Dnipro can burn 50-70% of budget in Kyiv with no result.

Account structure — the foundation of everything

The first thing I do on any Kyiv project is the account structure. It's not just “create campaigns and add keywords”. It's information architecture design that determines how efficiently every UAH of budget is spent.

  1. Intent segmentation. Separate campaigns for “hot” commercial queries (buy, order, price), “warm” comparison ones (reviews, best) and “cold” informational (how, what is). This allows different budgets and bids based on real click value.
  2. Geographic segmentation. Separate campaign for Kyiv, separate for the region, possibly separate for specific districts (Pecherskyi, Shevchenkivskyi — premium audience, different behavior).
  3. Product / service segmentation. Separate ad groups for each major direction. Critical for ad quality — you need 100% match between query, ad and landing.
  4. Device segmentation. If mobile traffic delivers a different CPA — separate bid strategies.
  5. Brand vs non-brand segmentation. Brand queries (your name) — separate campaign with minimum bid, competitor — separate.

The result is a typical Kyiv-business account with 8-25+ campaigns, clear logic and transparent analytics. The bigger the budget, the more complex the structure. Without this foundation Smart Bidding doesn't work: the algorithm optimizes on averages, and you pay for averages instead of optimization per segment.

Keyword research for Kyiv — depth matters more than width

For Kyiv competition the standard “collect 100 keywords and launch” approach doesn't work. I do keyword research on 500-3000+ queries with full intent, volume, competition and CPC analysis.

  • Collection from all sources. Google Keyword Planner, Ahrefs, Serpstat, Google Trends, Search Console (if you have organic traffic), plus manual collection via Google autocomplete and “people also search” in SERPs.
  • Intent classification. Commercial (buy, order, price), comparison (reviews, best, vs), navigational (brand, competitor), informational (how, what is, why).
  • Localization modifiers. “Kyiv”, “in Kyiv”, district names (“Pecherskyi”, “Podil”), metro stations (“near Khreshchatyk”), streets. This delivers better relevance and lower CPC.
  • Long-tail queries. Low frequency (10-100 impressions/month) but high intent. In Kyiv they're often missed by big agencies — your chance to win conversions cheaper.
  • Competitor queries. Analysis of keywords used by Netpeak, Promodo, Webpromo (if you're an agency too) or your direct competitors.

If you're also planning SEO, the keyword research for Google Ads becomes the basis of content strategy. Healthy synergy: PPC delivers fast results, SEO — long-term.

Negative keywords — where 30-50% of budget is saved

In Kyiv, without an aggressive negative keyword list, Google Ads turns into a black hole. I prepare lists at 4 levels:

  • General negatives. “Free”, “DIY”, “reviews”, “jobs”, “work”, “learning”, “courses” (if you're not an education business), “torrent”, “download”. Base list of 200-300 phrases.
  • Niche negatives. Specific to your business. E.g., for dentistry — “children's dentistry” (if not your profile), “state”, “free”, “promotions”. Another 200-500 phrases.
  • Geo negatives. Excluding other cities if your geo target is only Kyiv. Region names, regional centers, other countries.
  • Competitor brands. If you don't want to show on competitor brand queries (sometimes you do — interception strategy).

This isn't “set and forget”. Weekly I review the Search Terms Report and add new negatives. A good account accumulates 1500-3000 negatives over 6 months — your competitive moat.

Conversion tracking: GA4 + Google Tag Manager + Google Ads

Without correct conversion tracking Google Ads is a guessing game. I build a three-tier analytics architecture:

  1. Google Tag Manager (GTM). Site container that pushes all events. Configured here: form submission, click on phone/Telegram/WhatsApp/Viber, video views, form scroll, add to cart, checkout, purchase, “call me” button.
  2. Google Analytics 4 (GA4). Receives events from GTM, marks key ones as conversions, delivers behavior reports, attribution model. Base reports — Conversions, Acquisition, Engagement.
  3. Google Ads. Imports conversions from GA4 (recommended path because it syncs the attribution model) or has its own custom conversions via GTM.

Separately I configure offline conversions for businesses with CRM: when a lead closes into a deal — it's automatically passed to Google Ads, and Smart Bidding optimizes not on “lead” but on “real revenue”. Especially important for Kyiv B2B with long sales cycles. Integration via CRM API, Zapier or our custom connector depending on the system (Bitrix24, Pipedrive, HubSpot, KeyCRM).

If you don't have a site, or it's outdated — first we do development or UX audit. Without a working site, ads run into a void.

Smart Bidding — when and how to launch

Smart Bidding is automated bid management by Google based on ML and real-time data. In Kyiv with its high CPC it often outperforms manual — but rules are strict:

  • Launch only after 30-50 conversions in 30 days. Without this base, the algorithm has nothing to learn from.
  • Clean data. Conversions must be valid — no duplicates, no offline garbage, no spam forms.
  • Stable account structure. Don't simultaneously launch Smart Bidding and change settings weekly — the algorithm enters a 7-14 day learning period.
  • Sufficient daily budget. Smart Bidding needs flexibility — recommended daily budget from 500 UAH minimum.

Strategies I use most often:

  1. Maximize Conversions — start without CPA cap, for data collection.
  2. Target CPA — after stabilization, target a specific cost per acquisition.
  3. Target ROAS — for e-commerce with varying cart values.
  4. Maximize Conversion Value — for B2B with varying deal values.

Remarketing for the Kyiv market

In Kyiv with its dense traffic, remarketing often delivers the best ROAS in the entire account. Audience is warm, click cost is lower, conversion is higher. I build multi-layer segmentation:

  • All visitors 30/60/90 days — broad reach via Display and YouTube.
  • Cart abandoners — for e-commerce, aggressive retargeting with promotional discount.
  • Viewed pricing / contacts — hot leads, separate messaging and higher budget.
  • Did not convert in 7/14/30 days — exclude those who already submitted a request.
  • Customer Match — upload customer base from CRM, target “twins” (Similar Audiences).
  • YouTube viewers — separate retargeting for those who watched your video.

Remarketing channels: Display (banners on GDN), YouTube (video retargeting, especially 6-second bumper ads), Performance Max (as one of the signals), Search (RLSA — search remarketing with adjusted bids for repeat visitors).

Performance Max and YouTube — scaling for Kyiv

After 2-3 months of Search campaigns and a sufficient conversion base, I often launch Performance Max — a hybrid ML campaign across all Google networks. Works well for:

  • E-commerce with product feed and Google Merchant Center.
  • Services with clear conversions and a budget from 50,000 UAH/month.
  • Brands with ready creative assets (video, banners, copy).

YouTube I run via Skippable in-stream (TrueView), Bumper ads (6 seconds) and Shorts. Especially effective for Kyiv brands needing awareness — bids here are lower than Search, reach is massive. Integrates with remarketing and Customer Match for cross-channel funnel.

How I differ from large Kyiv agencies

The Kyiv PPC market is split: on one pole — large agencies (Netpeak, Promodo, Webpromo, Roman, Ester Solutions) with 50-200 specialists, on the other — OLX and LinkedIn freelancers. I'm between these two worlds:

  • Senior level. 15 years in digital, not just PPC but also UI/UX, web development, analytics. That means systemic vision, not just “tweaking bids”.
  • Personal work. I run the account personally. In a large agency a junior-mid handles 10-20 clients simultaneously — your project gets 1-2 hours per week.
  • Transparency. Fixed work fee, no % of spend. Your account belongs to you via MCC.
  • Flexibility. Ad change — 24 hours. At an agency — ticket, approval, 5-10 days.
  • Entry threshold. Work from 30,000 UAH/month. Large agencies rarely take projects under 80-150k.
  • Comprehensive approach. Can simultaneously do UX redesign of the landing and configure ads — without contractor chaos.

I don't try to compete with Netpeak — they have their niche (large budgets, corporate clients, full team). I'm right for businesses that want personal attention from a senior specialist without agency bureaucracy.

Reporting and analytics

My reporting philosophy is transparency and freedom. I don't make “pretty PDFs with charts once a month” that give clients nothing. Instead:

  • Live dashboard in Looker Studio — updates in real time, 24/7 access. Shows spend, conversions, CPA, ROAS, dynamics, top campaigns.
  • Weekly check-in. 30-min call or text report in Telegram: what changed, what we launched, what we optimized, plans for next week.
  • Monthly detailed report. Month summary, current metrics analysis, recommendations, forecast for next month.
  • Account access. You always have direct access to Google Ads — see anything any time.

Cases: working with Kyiv businesses

The portfolio on filyuk.top includes projects where Google Ads was part of comprehensive digital-presence work — from site development to PPC launch and follow-up SEO optimization. Among typical Kyiv niches I've worked with:

  • B2B software and IT. Long sales cycles, expensive leads, importance of offline conversions from CRM.
  • E-commerce with Kyiv delivery. Shopping campaigns, Performance Max, cart-abandoner remarketing.
  • Legal services. Most expensive auction in Kyiv, critical landing quality and call-tracking.
  • Healthcare / dentistry. Local 3-7 km targeting from clinic, video remarketing, MIS-system integration for offline conversions.
  • Education and courses. Interest audiences, YouTube for trust-building, dynamic remarketing on specific courses.
  • Real estate. High CPCs, remarketing on those who viewed specific objects, integration with developer CRMs.

Common mistakes Kyiv businesses make in Google Ads

  • Launch without analytics. Ads run, no one counts conversions. In Kyiv this costs 30-50k UAH of wasted budget in the first 2 months.
  • One Performance Max instead of Search. Performance Max without a Search-conversion base just burns budget on irrelevant reach traffic.
  • Ignoring negative keywords. “We'll set them up later” — that's automatic 30-40% budget loss from day one.
  • Weak landing. Excellent ad, Tilda landing without UX. CTR 5%, conversion 0.3%. Money to nowhere. Fixable via conversion optimization.
  • Low budget for Kyiv. 10-15k UAH/month on a competitive Kyiv niche guarantees zero result. Better not to launch than burn such a budget.
  • Working with an agency through their account. At separation you lose all data. Always require account ownership.

My other services for Kyiv businesses

Google Ads rarely works alone. Best ROI comes from a comprehensive approach:

  • SEO — long-term organic that reduces dependence on paid ads.
  • Conversion optimization (CRO) — when traffic is there but doesn't convert.
  • UI/UX design — landing redesign for ads.
  • Web development — from landing to full e-commerce.
  • SMM — Meta Ads, TikTok Ads, audience syncing with Google Ads.
  • Email marketing — warming up leads from PPC.
  • Ad creatives — Display banners, YouTube videos.
  • Business consulting — strategy before performance investment.

Google Ads in other Ukrainian cities

I run ads not only for Kyiv. If you have branches in several cities or plan regional expansion — we'll build a system that scales:

  • Lviv — creative business, IT, gastronomy, tourism
  • Odesa — retail, e-commerce, real estate
  • Dnipro — B2B, manufacturing, technology companies
  • Kharkiv — IT, education, engineering
