Print is a discipline where mistakes do not get forgiven. A logo in RGB instead of CMYK lays down differently on paper. Without bleeds, a finished brochure shows a white border. If a font is not embedded, the printer swaps it for a default and the layout collapses. I am Oleksandr Filiuk, 15+ years in print and 130+ projects, and over that time I have seen every one of those mistakes in other designers' work. In Chernivtsi, where the print tradition goes back to the Austro-Hungarian era, quality demands are particularly strict.
The city of around 265 thousand lives at once as the tourism capital of Bukovyna, a university hub (the Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University, the Bukovynian State Medical University), a cafe Europe, and a region of family wineries. Each segment has its own print needs — from a small business-card run for a Kobylianska boutique to a 200-page light industry catalog.
Chernivtsi is one of the few Ukrainian cities whose entire historic center is on the UNESCO tentative list, with the Residence of Bukovynian and Dalmatian Metropolitans on the main list since 2011. This generates strong demand for tourism guides: hotels, apartments, and tour offices need handouts for guests. I build a guide as a tool: clear route, readable map, photos of key locations (Turkish Square, Town Hall, Opera and Ballet Theatre, Kobylianska Street), translation in two languages. Paper is water-resistant or laminated, format A5 or EuroFold for pocket convenience.
I use InDesign with a strong master-page system and paragraph and character styles. This makes annual updates fast (new prices, new routes) without rebuilding the whole layout.
The Carpathian foothills are going through a wine renaissance. Family wineries that existed as garage production a decade ago now reach shelves in specialty stores in Kyiv, Lviv, Poland, and Romania. Packaging is their main communication tool, because in most situations the customer meets the brand on the shelf, without a salesperson, without the winemaker.
I work with the full set: front label, back with legal copy, neck label, capsule, tube or gift box, and the dielines for all of it. Paper — Fedrigoni, Arjowiggins, Antalis for premium, local suppliers for larger runs. Finishing — foil stamping, embossing, selective UV varnish. Preflight and color proof are mandatory before press. The brand foundation is set at branding or /locations/chernivtsi/branding, then print extends it across media.
Cafes on Kobylianska, Soborna, Universytetska, Hetmana Sahaidachnoho — a dense field with high competition. A menu here is not just a list of items. It is part of the venue's atmosphere, an extension of the interior, a silent salesperson. I make menus in formats that sit well on the table (usually A5 with hardcover or A4 with rings for page updates), with typography that reads in morning and evening light, with lamination or leather binding.
I also produce seasonal inserts separately — so the cafe can update a summer menu or special brunches without reprinting the whole core menu. This saves budget and adds flexibility.
Chernivtsi has a light industry tradition — textiles, leather, footwear, accessories. These businesses need catalogs for wholesale clients and trade fairs (Chernivtsi, Lviv, Kyiv, Poznan, Prague). A 40-80 page catalog with product photography is its own discipline: correct grid, photo style, price table, technical specs, contacts. I build it in InDesign so the client can add new items via my styles without a designer.
Chernivtsi education is another segment. The National University and the Bukovynian State Medical University regularly need conference programs, scientific proceedings, and applicant brochures. Work with academic materials demands particular accuracy in typography and Cyrillic font handling.
Send a brief, or we build one on a call. I select the printer for your budget and run, prepare files to its tech specs (PDF/X, CMYK, Pantone, bleeds), run preflight, and can attend the press check. A 50% prepayment starts the work, the second part before files go to press. If your project also spans brand or advertising, see /locations/chernivtsi/branding and /locations/chernivtsi/ad-creatives.
